Cardiovascular Infection Series, Lecture-8: Malaria and Babesiosis by Dr. Sahjid Mukhida

Learning Objectives and Clinical Implications

  1. Understand the epidemiology, transmission, and life cycle of Malaria and Babesiosis, including their global and regional burden.
  2. Differentiate the causative organisms, vectors, and pathogenesis of malaria and babesiosis, with emphasis on similarities and distinguishing clinical features.
  3. Recognize the clinical manifestations of uncomplicated and severe malaria, including cerebral malaria, severe anemia, acute kidney injury, and multiorgan dysfunction.
  4. Identify the characteristic presentation and complications of babesiosis, particularly hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and severe disease in immunocompromised or splenectomized patients.
  5. Develop competency in diagnostic approaches, including peripheral blood smear interpretation, rapid diagnostic tests, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and relevant laboratory investigations.
  6. Apply evidence-based treatment strategies for malaria and babesiosis, including antimalarial regimens, antimicrobial therapy, supportive care, and indications for exchange transfusion in severe babesiosis.
  7. Understand preventive strategies such as vector control, personal protective measures, chemoprophylaxis, blood safety screening, and public health interventions to reduce disease transmission.
  8. Appreciate the clinical implications of early recognition and timely management in reducing complications, mortality, antimicrobial resistance, and healthcare burden associated with these parasitic infections.
